Demantoid – a diamond-like stone of bright green color

 Origin history

It was first discovered in the middle of the 19th century in Russia. Children found the mineral while frolicking on the Bank of the Bobrovka river. The find was first taken for a kind of chrysolite. Russian demantoids began to be mined by prospectors who extracted platinum and gold nuggets in the valley of this river. Only in 1849 did the minerals fall into the hands of the Finnish Explorer Nils Nordenskiold.

He studied the gem and found that it is a chrome-containing variety of andradite garnet, which has an unusual color that changes from emerald to chrysolite, and not the chrysolite itself. Five years later, Nordenskiold spoke about the results of his research at a meeting of the Mineralogical society. In the same place, he suggested calling the stone a "demantoid" because it had a strong "play" of color, like a diamond.
